Introduction
Automatic food waste composting machine is used for the production of organic soil conditioners from wet waste in residential and commercial areas. Composting mechanism of this array of machines depends on a special type of bacteria that reproduces itself under its controlled internal temperature. The proliferation of this bacteria promotes the fast conversion of wet waste into soil conditioners through composting. Along with composting, this array of machines converts the moisture of waste into vapour which is later released through the drain to reduce the volume of formed compost. Constant internal airflow and high temperature of automatic composting machines prevent the build-up of bacteria and odour generation inside these.
Challenges
Temperature Control: Maintaining the ideal temperature range for composting to promote microbial activity and accelerate the decomposition process.
Moisture Regulation: Monitoring and controlling the moisture content in the compost to avoid issues like excessive drying or over-saturation.
Oxygen Management: Ensuring adequate oxygen supply for aerobic composting while avoiding anaerobic conditions that may produce unpleasant odours.
Composting Process Monitoring: Developing a comprehensive monitoring system to track key composting parameters and assess the progress of the composting process.
Solution
GIC PLC & TC play essential roles in automating the entire process according to the next sequence.
The PLC is responsible for regulating the machine’s sequence. If the input switch is turned ON, the Blower operates continuously after one minute from the start of the cycle. The conveyer motor runs in the forward position, stops for one minute, and then resumes running in the reverse direction for one minute. The Blower continues to operate until the cycle stops. The total cycle time is six minutes, and the Blower is used to reduce warm air inside the machine.
On the other hand, the TC controls the machine’s heater. Inside the machine, there is one heater, two RTD (Resistive Temperature Detector) sensors, and one humidity sensor. The heater switches on and off based on the output from the RTD sensors and humidity sensor. The heater remains on until the TC’s set value is reached.
